Ugly Betty: “Tornado Girl”

Betty begs for the chance to give the final approval for Mode magazine’s latest edition while Daniel is away at a business retreat, sans cell phone. This particular issue sports a flashy tornado with a supermodel imposed over it and the title ‘Eye of the Storm’. Satisfied the issue is ready to go and after having given final approval to ship the magazines out, Betty takes a break and is horrified to see a major news alert about a once in a decade twister destroying parts of Tibsley, Kansas and leaving many dead. Betty, in a desperate dash to reach Daniel, ends up hiring a sky writer to get the message to Daniel and is comforted when he says he’ll take care of it.

Daniel ignores Betty’s concern, and in an attempt to boost sales through controversy, decides to ship the magazine as-is. Word slips that Betty was responsible for the PR nightmare and her reputation is ruined. When Betty finds out Daniel purposely shipped the issues, she feels betrayed and confronts him. He eventually comes clean during a press conference, clears Betty’s name and donates all profits from that issue to a relief fund for the tornado victims.

In the meantime, Hilda is denied her permit to run a salon out of her home. Angered, she decides to run a underground salon ‘speak easy’ until her father finds out. She and Betty decide to pursue the matter further with councilman Rodriguez. He eventually comes around with a ‘loophole’ that will allow Hilda to run her salon as long as 30% of her profits come from selling products. They laugh, smile at each other ‘in that way’ and we can assume we will be seeing more of the councilman in future episodes. Love interest, perhaps?

Speaking of love interests, a woman falls out of a tree and lands on Daniel during the retreat. He becomes very enamored of her and is despondent to find out it is Connor’s fiance. Wilhelmina, upset to find out Connor even has a fiance, is happy to see his soon-to-be bride, Molly, is ‘wonderfully ordinary’ and that Molly is upset when Connor has to work late. On the note of fiance’s, Marc confesses to Cliff that he cheated on him and it appears their engagement is off.

—My thanks to Hanna who pointed out a previous spelling error. I incorrectly spelled Marc with a ‘k’ instead of a ‘c’. As well, I also mixed up Phil, the dock manager, with Cliff, the boyfriend.
